Beyond Typing, Rebuilt for 2026-2027: What You Need to Know

The Beyond Typing curriculum you've been using is getting a complete rebuild for the 2026-2027 school year. Not patches, not a few new lessons - we've reconstructed the units you already know with all-new content, deeper grade coverage, and dramatically more lessons. Here's the quick rundown of what's changing.

New to PLUS? "Beyond Typing" is our curriculum section that goes past typing mechanics into broader digital skills-digital citizenship, AI, computer applications, cross-curricular content, and more. Everything in this article lives there.

Six of your existing Beyond Typing units are now rebuilt (preview them now), with a seventh - Spreadsheets - coming soon
In mid-July 2026, these rebuilt units replace your current Beyond Typing units (Test Prep and Creative Writing stay as-is)
All of it is PLUS-only, including the new Cross-Curricular units that replace today's free version
Student progress in the preview carries over - assign now without worry
AI lessons are guided and constrained - no open-ended chatbot access for students

What's Being Rebuilt

Here's everything coming to Beyond Typing for 2026-2027, in the order you'll see it in the menu. Click into any unit for the full details.

Digital Citizenship - 40 lessons scaled across four dedicated grade bands, now laser-focused on citizenship and communication
Technology Foundations - Pulled out as its own dedicated unit so both Tech Foundations and Digital Citizenship can finally go deep
Word Processing - Computer Applications 1 - A fully simulated Google Docs UI built right into Typing.com, with automatic evaluation (no more grading PDFs!)
Spreadsheets - Computer Applications 2 (coming soon) - Same simulated-UI model as Word Processing, in development now
AI Literacy - 39 lessons (3.5× more than today), with a brand-new Adult track and 8 standards frameworks
Cross Curricular 1 - Worlds and the Arts - Social Studies, Geography, Health, Arts & Music, World Languages, Life Skills
Cross Curricular 2 - STEM - Science and Math with grade-specific, standards-aligned content

Two Big Cross-Cutting Upgrades

Two things are changing across most of the rebuilt units:

Themed video intros - Every lesson in these rebuilt units (except Cross Curricular) now starts with a fully-narrated video that covers that lesson's educational material. The videos are themed to the World each student has chosen, and they use Socratic dialog - the mentor and mentee characters from that specific World (right now, Pixel Kingdom and Princess Adventures) walking through the concept together. That's dramatically more engaging and effective from a learning standpoint than a single narrator or text on a screen.
Themes and Worlds - Immersive themed environments with their own characters, mascot guides, and animated 3D hands that show students exactly which finger to use. Pixel Kingdom and Princess Adventures are live now, with more on the way.

Heads Up: The July 2026 Transition

These brand new, rebuilt units are currently grouped under "Beyond Typing 2026/27 PREVIEW" so you can explore and use them now, in parallel with our existing content.

In mid-July 2026, the preview group goes away and these new units replace your existing Beyond Typing units entirely. Existing Test Prep and Creative Writing units stay as-is.

A couple of things to flag:

Cross-Curricular is shifting from free to PLUS. Today's free Cross-Curricular Typing unit (~50 lessons) is being replaced by two much larger PLUS units. If you've relied on the free version, make sure your PLUS subscription is set before July.
Preview progress is safe. Anything your students complete in the preview now carries over when these units become the standard Beyond Typing curriculum in July. No resets.

Where Can I Find It?

Head to your Curriculum section in the Teacher Portal and look under Beyond Typing for the group called "Beyond Typing 2026/27 PREVIEW." Browse, preview, and assign any unit right now-your students' progress will carry forward when these become the default in July.
