It\u2019s due first thing in the morning. If you type <\/span><b>50 <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.typing.com\/blog\/what-is-words-per-minute\"><b>words-per-minute (WPM)<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you could be done in just half an hour. That\u2019s not too bad. You\u2019d still have time for a good night\u2019s sleep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, what if you type with just your two pointer fingers at a rate of <\/span><b>10 WPM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? That same report would take you TWO AND A HALF hours to finish. That\u2019s an <\/span><b>extra two hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of your life that you\u2019ve just lost!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning to type faster makes you more efficient and helps save precious hours of your life. For students, this can mean <\/span><b>spending less time on homework<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>better scores on typing speed tests<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For employees, this can make you shine at work by being faster and more efficient. Read on to find free typing speed tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is an average typing speed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average typing speed is roughly 40 WPM, though this can change dramatically depending on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you type. For those who type with just two fingers\u2014the \u201chunt and peck\u201d method\u2014you have to look for each key as you type. Sadly, no matter how fast you move, there is a limit to how fast you can type up words. For those using this method, the average speed is just<\/span><b> 27 WPM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, typing with all 10 fingers you can train your fingers to type the right keys without looking down at them. Also, by moving shorter distances across the keyboard you can type much faster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it shows. The average touch typist using all 10 fingers types over <\/span><b>50 WPM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, roughly twice as fast as you can go with just two fingers. Keep in mind that\u2019s just the average. Using this technique, most are able to type MUCH faster. Sean Wrona, one of the fastest typists alive today types as fast as <\/span><b>256 WPM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Thus, you should <\/span><b>aim for a typing speed of at least 40 WPM<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to keep up a standard level of efficiency at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some professions, the standards are higher. To land a job as a personal or executive assistant, you might be required to type at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/work.chron.com\/wpm-average-administrative-assistant-29030.html#:~:text=In%20general%2C%20administrative%20assistants%20should,a%20near%2Dperfect%20accuracy%20rate.\"><b>least 60 words per minute<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Word processors generally must be able to type in a range of <\/span><b>55 to 90 words per minute<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For other jobs that deal heavily with computers, from programmers to journalists, there usually isn\u2019t a specified typing speed requirement. But, you can bet that if you take too long to type, it will hamper your productivity. With every lesson you complete, you create muscle memory in all of your fingers. While practicing using all 10 fingers in the right positions to hit the keys, you can train your fingers to remember it on their own.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working on this for just 15 minutes a day, after the first couple of weeks, you\u2019ll know the exact location of every key without even looking down at the keyboard. But remember, the key is in learning the RIGHT way. Without learning the correct positions, you\u2019ll just be wasting your time. You might even slow yourself down in the long run. Typing is no exception.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably imagine that the fastest and most effective typing method is the most common method: using 10 fingers. With the right practice, you can learn to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.typing.com\/blog\/\/hunt-and-peck\/?utm_source=fractl&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=time-saving-of-fast-typists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">effectively employ all 10 fingers in your typing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by placing the thumbs in the optimal positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Typing.com survey found that typing with all 10 fingers was the method used by 61 percent of respondents, allowing them to produce an average of 54.6 wpm. But as we also found, this wasn&#8217;t the fastest method in our survey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1266 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Typing-WPM-infographic-comparison.png\" alt=\"Typing WPM infographic comparison\" width=\"800\" height=\"869\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Typing-WPM-infographic-comparison.png 800w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Typing-WPM-infographic-comparison-276x300.png 276w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Typing-WPM-infographic-comparison-768x834.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Typing-WPM-infographic-comparison-552x600.png 552w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Workers who used five to nine fingers comprised just over a quarter of those surveyed but averaged 54.7 wpm\u2014just a little faster than those who used all 10 fingers. This implies typing speed can be achieved in multiple ways, but using improper techniques can lead to typos\u2014and potentially costly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.typing.com\/blog\/\/expensive-typos\/?utm_source=fractl&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=time-saving-of-fast-typists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consequences<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With practice, though, even long-held <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.typing.com\/blog\/\/break-bad-typing-habits?utm_source=fractl&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=time-saving-of-fast-typists\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bad habits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be ironed out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To maximize speed and accuracy, typing experts suggest students train themselves not to look down at their fingers or the keyboard by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.typing.com\/blog\/\/muscle-memory\/?utm_source=fractl&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=time-saving-of-fast-typists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developing muscle memory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fortunately, over half of our respondents primarily used this technique, averaging 61 wpm and almost 17 words faster than those who looked at both the keyboard and screen when typing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less than 5 percent of typists primarily looked at the keyboard and trailed the other two methods with a lackluster 39.5 wpm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you&#8217;re looking to improve your skill and, ultimately, the number of words you can type per minute, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.typing.com\/student\/lessons?utm_source=fractl&amp;utm_medium=article&amp;utm_campaign=time-saving-of-fast-typists\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">regular practice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can make a huge difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Typing Speed Improves in Every Generation<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we broke down typing speed by generation and gender, male baby boomers were the slowest, averaging only 38 wpm. Women in the same generation typed 14.7 percent more words per minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, women&#8217;s typing speeds were slightly faster than men&#8217;s, but millennial men departed from that trend. Millennial men outpaced their female contemporaries by a small margin, typing 2.7% more words per minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1267 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Infographics-Typing-speed-by-generation.png\" alt=\"Typing speed by generation infographic\" width=\"800\" height=\"863\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Infographics-Typing-speed-by-generation.png 800w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Infographics-Typing-speed-by-generation-278x300.png 278w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Infographics-Typing-speed-by-generation-768x828.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/Infographics-Typing-speed-by-generation-556x600.png 556w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While baby boomers typed over 8,200 words every day, Gen Xers typed 24.3 percent more (an extra 2,000 words). Millennials typed even more, putting in 8.7 percent more words than Gen Xers. Considering millennials spend 69.1 percent of their workweek typing, it&#8217;s no wonder they clock in more words across the keyboard than older employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millennials also happen to make up the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2018\/04\/11\/millennials-largest-generation-us-labor-force\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largest sector of working Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> today. Not only do they lend their fast typing skills to the workforce, but also they are notably <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/better\/business\/7-ways-millennials-are-changing-workplace-better-ncna761021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">versatile, flexible, and purpose-driven<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compared to past generations.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How accurately should my students type?<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/images.pexels.com\/photos\/3184468\/pexels-photo-3184468.jpeg?auto=compress&amp;cs=tinysrgb&amp;dpr=1&amp;w=500\" alt=\"People Inside Room\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a STEM teacher, you know that correctly typed words and accurate typing skills are crucial for successful edtech students. As millions of students have gone through our typing lessons, we have developed a basic set of accuracy thresholds based on a student\u2019s grade in school:<\/p>\n<p><strong>K-2:\u00a0<\/strong>80-85%<\/p>\n<p><strong>3-5:\u00a0<\/strong>85-90%<\/p>\n<p><strong>6-12:\u00a0<\/strong>90-95%<\/p>\n<p>While these are the targets we recommend, they\u2019re not set in stone.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a teacher, you can set the standards yourself by giving your students a few practice lessons and then tracking their average accuracy through the portal.
