And just like you, people speaking various languages all over the world have had to practice typing for school, work, or leisure.<\/p>\n<p>But wait a second, don\u2019t those language differences affect typing?<\/p>\n<p>Of course, they do!<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the standard QWERTY keyboard used in the U.S., there are actually many different keyboard layouts available to accommodate different languages.<\/p>\n<p>The keys on these international keyboards are located in different places based on the letters and accents that are used most frequently.<\/p>\n<h2>How keyboards differ in different countries<\/h2>\n<p>For example, the French language contains a variety of accented letters which don\u2019t exist on the U.S. keyboard, so the numbers row on the French keyboard is used primarily for accented letters.<\/p>\n<p>A few other keys are also moved around on the French keyboard (instead of QWERTY, the first row reads AZERTY).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_183\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-183\" style=\"width: 735px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-183 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/french-keyboard.png\" alt=\"learn french keyboard\" width=\"735\" height=\"308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/french-keyboard.png 735w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/french-keyboard-300x126.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/french-keyboard-600x251.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 735px) 100vw, 735px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-183\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">French keyboard layout (AZERTY)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Another slight modification to the QWERTY keyboard is the QWERTZ keyboard, used mainly in central Europe. There are even multiple versions of this format to suit the various languages and dialects used in this region of the world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-184\" style=\"width: 734px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-184 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/german-keyboard.png\" alt=\"learn german typing\" width=\"734\" height=\"302\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/german-keyboard.png 734w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/german-keyboard-300x123.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/german-keyboard-600x247.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 734px) 100vw, 734px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Germany keyboard layout (QWERTZ)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There are several other international keyboards as well, such as the Russian keyboard which features an entirely different set of letters from the Cyrillic alphabet (vs. the Latin-based English alphabet).<\/p>\n<p>Aside from changes to accommodate language differences, there are a few keyboards featuring different layouts based on efficiency in typing English.<\/p>\n<p>The most notable is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/dvorak-keyboard\/\">Dvorak keyboard<\/a>, named after its inventor August Dvorak, who discovered a more efficient and comfortable configuration of keys to improve typing speed and user experience.<\/p>\n<p>Using this layout, users can type more words without moving their fingers away from the home row, although the widespread use of the QWERTY design means this layout is rarely seen or taught.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_155\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-155\" style=\"width: 742px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-155\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Dvorak-keyboard.png\" alt=\"dvorak keyboard\" width=\"742\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Dvorak-keyboard.png 742w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Dvorak-keyboard-300x123.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Dvorak-keyboard-600x246.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 742px) 100vw, 742px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-155\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dvorak keyboard layout<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>How to change your keyboard settings<\/h2>\n<p>Most students will only need to learn typing on a single keyboard format. Nonetheless, it\u2019s useful and interesting to know about the differences in layouts.<\/p>\n<p>Even better, most computers allow users to change the keyboard format in the settings. So,\u00a0even if you\u2019re far from home in another country you can always find the \u201chome row.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s just one problem.\u00a0Even\u00a0if the computer registers the\u00a0QWERTY layout, the keys at your fingertips still have the same markings. That means\u00a0that when traveling, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.typing.com\/muscle-memory\/\">touch typing<\/a> (typing without looking at your fingers) is more important than ever.<\/p>\n<p>Our typing lessons work not only for students with the standard American QWERTY keyboard.
